Umbra Restaurant

Project: Umbra Restaurant Type: Hospitality Location: Chișinău (Moldova, Republic of) With: Project by Arch. Lupașcu Tatiana, founder of Archform Architects, in collaboration with Vladimir Pînzaru, Serbul Maria, Veaceslav Muntean Collection: Nuvem Photographer: Oleg Bajura
What challenges and opportunities emerged during the development of this restaurant design project?

The main challenge was transforming a basement space without natural light into an intimate, functional, and welcoming restaurant environment. The absence of daylight required a strategic lighting design approach to recreate depth, warmth, and visual balance.

To achieve this, the project integrates mirrors, light boxes, concealed LED strips, and reflective golden surfaces that help amplify and distribute light throughout the space.

At the same time, this constraint became a valuable opportunity to explore lighting as a central element of interior design. By carefully layering light and shadow, the project creates a refined atmosphere where textures, materials, and subtle contrasts enhance the elegance and intimacy of the restaurant space.

Why Slamp?

The choice of Slamp lighting was driven by the sculptural quality of the lamps, the refined materials, and their ability to diffuse light in distinctive and controlled ways.

Slamp lamps integrate seamlessly with contemporary interior design projects, acting both as functional lighting solutions and decorative elements.

In this project, they helped create a warm, inviting, and visually dynamic atmosphere — a crucial factor for a restaurant located in a basement space without natural light.

Why is lighting design important in public and residential spaces?

Lighting design plays a fundamental role in defining both the functionality and the atmosphere of a space. In public environments such as restaurants, hospitality venues, or lounges, lighting helps guide circulation, highlight architectural elements, and shape the overall ambience experienced by guests.

In residential interiors, lighting enhances comfort, emphasizes spatial hierarchy, and contributes to the expression of personal style. Thoughtfully designed lighting solutions transform spaces by influencing perception, emotions, and social interaction, creating environments that are not only visually appealing but also experiential.
