What challenges and opportunities did you encounter during the development of this project?
Interior Designer Francesca Sposato

The main challenge stemmed from the small size of the hotel: the spaces were very compact and the layout quite constrained. Structurally, there was little room for major alterations, so I chose to focus on highlighting the building's original architectural features. This included revealing ceiling vaults and sections of masonry, while maintaining a sense of sobriety throughout with natural tones in the paint and finishes.

The only decorative elements were the light fixtures, whose floral-inspired designs added a warm, enveloping touch of design while preserving the essence of local craftsmanship.

The opportunity, on the other hand, was the chance to feature a curated selection of companies that embody the excellence of Made in Italy within a compact setting—like a small treasure chest with the unique advantage of overlooking the stunning Trajan’s Markets, right in the heart of the Imperial Forums.

How did you first discover Slamp and why did you choose our lamps?
Interior Designer Francesca Sposato

I first discovered Slamp as a design student, when the company was just emerging and already showing a strong desire to innovate, thanks in part to a collaboration with the Quasar Institute around the year 2000. My professional journey later brought me into contact with the manufacturing hub of Pomezia, where I witnessed Slamp’s remarkable growth and the strategic decisions that elevated the brand to international prominence.

I have followed and admired Slamp throughout its evolution, and, appreciating both the technical qualities and the philosophy behind its production, I naturally felt compelled to select its pieces as a true reflection of the message I wanted to convey.

Having the chance to engage directly with the production process—experiencing firsthand the creation of objects that are not only artistically impactful but also carry the spirit of craftsmanship—sparked immediate enthusiasm in the hotel owners as well, who quickly recognized Slamp as the ideal partner.

How important is lighting in defining a public or domestic space?
Interior Designer Francesca Sposato

In my personal interpretation of interior design, lighting is the most powerful tool at a designer’s disposal, offering two simultaneous dimensions of expression.

On one hand, it influences the senses through the elusive play of shadows and color temperature, creating moods and emotional responses.

On the other, it asserts itself physically through the light fixture itself—sometimes minimal and conceptual, other times bold and commanding—always capable of giving character to an otherwise empty space, making it speak for itself. In silence.
